Skills That Affect Pay in Trend Research Work
By Influish Editorial Team · Published · Last updated
Short answer
We do not attach a rupee premium to any skill below. No public, verifiable dataset we know of measures that for trend research roles in India, and an invented percentage would be worse than none. Instead, this page explains why each skill is valued and what evidence you can show for it.
Which skills tend to raise pay for trend researchers?
| Skill | Why employers value it | Evidence you can show |
|---|---|---|
| Turning observations into findings | Anyone can say a Reel is popular. Paid researchers explain why it matters to a client and what to do next. | A one-page trend brief with a clear recommendation. |
| Speed with accuracy | Trends have short lives. Spotting one early is valuable only if it is real, not a one-off spike. | A dated log showing trends you flagged before they peaked. |
| Writing in more than one language | Indian social media runs across Hindi, English, Hinglish and regional languages; context is often language-specific. | The same brief written for two language audiences. |
| Spreadsheet and logging discipline | Clients and managers need data they can filter, count and reuse, not screenshots in a chat. | A clean, consistent trend log with defined columns. |
| Platform literacy | Knowing how Reels, audio, remixes and templates work helps you separate a format trend from a single viral post. | Notes explaining which signals you relied on and why. |
| Category or audience knowledge | Deep knowledge of a niche — beauty, cricket, regional cinema, fintech — makes your judgement worth more to clients in it. | Samples focused on one category over several weeks. |
| Brand-safety judgement | Recommending a trend that turns out to be offensive or misleading is costly. Judgement here is valued. | Examples where you flagged a trend as risky and explained why. |
| Social listening and research tools | Many agency roles use paid listening platforms; familiarity shortens onboarding. | Honest description of tools you have used and for what. |
Why doesn’t heavy scrolling alone raise pay?
The doomscroller story made headlines because it sounded like being paid for a habit. But according to the reports, the role involves spotting emerging trends and reporting them — and reporting is where the value is. Time spent watching is an input that almost anyone can supply. A short list of trends, each with a date, an example, a reason it is spreading and a judgement on whether it suits a brand, is an output that few people produce well.
That distinction also protects you. If an offer measures you only by the hours you watch or the number of Reels you view, ask what happens to that output. Legitimate research roles are judged on what you report.
How do experience and seniority change the picture?
Pay structures in most fields reward responsibility as much as skill. In trend and social insight work, the steps usually look like this:
- Entry level or intern: logging trends to a template, following a defined routine.
- Researcher or analyst: choosing what to log, writing briefs, presenting findings to a team.
- Lead or strategist: setting the research method, owning client relationships, advising on decisions.
Moving up a step is the most reliable way pay changes, more than any single skill. Ask, in interviews, what the next step looks like and what it would take to reach it.
Do location and language affect pay?
Usually, yes, though the direction is not always obvious. Large metro employers often have different pay scales from smaller cities, and remote roles may be priced against a different market altogether. Language can work in your favour when an employer needs coverage of a specific regional audience that few candidates understand well. Since the doomscroller role was announced by a company described as based in Udaipur, candidates there should research local pay norms rather than relying on metro figures. Our salary research methodology explains how.
How do you show these skills before an interview?
A compact portfolio does more for your negotiating position than a long CV. Three pieces are usually enough:
- A two-week trend log in a clean spreadsheet, with dates, links, signals and a status for each trend.
- One written brief explaining a single trend: what it is, why it is spreading, who it suits and its risks.
- A short retrospective: a trend you flagged, what happened next, and what you would do differently.

How should you bring skills into the pay conversation?
Tie each skill to the employer’s need, then to your number. For example: “I can cover Hindi and English Reels and deliver a daily log in your format; I’ve attached two weeks of samples. Based on that, I’m looking for a figure in this range.” The expected-salary guide shows how to set that range, and the offer checklist helps you compare what comes back.
